The thing is that there is a quite big party that comes to the restaurant and either leave a horrible low low tip or just do not leave any tip. They are smart they split the check almost all the time, so there is not gratuity!! What should the manager and the waiter/waitress do next time they come by and eat???? The worst thing is that they are frequent costumers !!!

First of all be sure that the policy is printed on the menu. Ring up the check as one large check and then add the gratuity. If you have an updated HSI or comparable system you should be able to ring it in by place number and then split the check after the gratuity is added. Gratuity policies are put into place to protect you since this is how you make your living. It's the number in your large party that counts not the way the check is split! Always have a manager handle it...that way if they complain, you can tell them that it is your policy and that the manager added the gratuity, you can also tell them that they can speak to a manager if they would like. If your manager can't see the issue or won't go to bat for you then find somewhere else to work where they take care of their people. You never know, if your gratuity policy is printed on the menu they may just be tipping poorly because they think it is already added. Good luck with that...it's touchy, I know...

It sucks that they dont leave a tip. However, they are spending and therefore making money for the restaurant. So if it were me, and I were the manager, I would add a hand written "suggested" 15% gratuity, and if that doesnt work, comp something off the bill after they have paid to take care of your servers. One bad experience and this big party could tell everyone they know and cut your business in half. Like they always say.... "This job would be GREAT if it wasn't for the customers"

There's not much you can do. I used to work in a coffee shop and an older couple would come in everyday and share a burger and fries and share a pie alamode. They were very high maintnence because we would do anything for our customers including split the food up onto two plates for them and they would sit for a long time and need many refills on there drinks. I always treated them very nicely and I couldn't understand why they never left a tip. The restraunt was owned by my grandma and she said that all they could afford was their food. They were all each other had and they just needed to get out of the house everyday for something different. My grandma would often send them home with an extra slice of pie or some doughnuts or something. She told me that they never tipped anyone becuase they just couldn't afford it. I stopped feeling bad about myself and just gve them the same service I gave everyone else.

I would not go out of my way for them. I would serve them, but if they were to come back in, I would tell your manager so they could handle it. Or ask to switch sections with someone else. You come to work to make money. Don't be rude or cop an attitude, be pleasant. I know that it is hard, I've been a waitress before, so I already know. Sometimes people will lie on you about the service you gave, so you really do not want to look bad in your managers eyes. Unfortunately, we have to deal with people like that.

At my restaurant they have a policy of eight or more in a party it's an automatic gratuity. We put it in as one party, add the gratuity and then split the bill. Each individual party gets the gratuity add on. We need to do this to protect the server.

the manager should write on all menus no splitting checks please and a 15% gratuity on a party of 6 and more. Its the least he/she can do for your service. I too once was a servier and it sucked because i went through the same thing but my manager became aware of it and decided to change the menu and let everyone know that there would be no more separtate checks and a 15% gratuity would be added...thank and come again..

once you're a waiter, you legally could record all your suggestions, and if the finished would not attain minimum salary, the eating place could pay as much as minimum salary, a minimum of (some have an contract to pay greater, yet maximum do no longer). the clincher is, the eating place HAS TO pay you a minimum of a small volume according to hour, so as that they'd call you an worker. maximum eating places will pay the minimum required via regulation, and rigidity the waiter to make something up in suggestions from the purchasers, in the different case be confronted with minimum salary. this means that, on suited of having to pay for an high priced meal (assuming this would properly be a eating place we are talking appropriate to here), the customer has tp pay the WAITER as properly, in the different case they are seen merciless. in actuality, it incredibly is the corporation itself it is greater merciless. think of those situations: a million. if the purchasers pay the waiter properly adequate, then the enterprise would not could, and nonetheless made the money from the meal. 2. if the purchasers do no longer pay the waiter properly adequate, the enterprise nonetheless basically has to pay them the type between the quantity of tip earnings step with hour, and the minimum salary promised via the government, and that they nonetheless have the money from the meal, which offsets that! what's greater, if the waiter falls into difficulty 2 too many times, they are seen a "undesirable waiter" via the enterprise, and are fired and altered via somebody else who's deperate adequate to paintings below such loopy regulations. if issues have been equitable, the enterprise would be required to pay a minimum of minimum salary to it incredibly is waiters, ON suited of suggestions, considering a tip could theoretically be seen as "greater desirable" top? yet once you're consistent with paying the suggestions out in improve, the enterprise makes out like a bandit, no longer having to pay that lots in any respect (that's, in some states, as low as $2.13). now who's the difficult one? i nonetheless bypass away a tip whilst the provider went previous expectancies, yet it is seldom the place i stay...

Many establishments put a note in their menus that a gratuity of 15% (up to 20% in fancier places) is automatically added to parties of seven or more.

Of course you risk alienating your frequent customers if you introduce such a policy. Certainly, your management should visit the table near the conclusion of their meal to ask if everything is to their satisfaction. They may or may not take the hint.

Also, realize that tipping is not common in all cultures. In Japan, it is actually considered rude to tip.

Good luck!

the manager can tell them that since they are in a group, they can not split the check. Also, the acronym of tips is "To Insure Prompt Service" so basically, if they dont tip, the next time they come in, do not give them good service. Make them wait an hour, dont give refills until they have asked 3 or 4 times, bring out the check IMMEDIATELY after they get their food, etc, etc

If I was the server, I would just give them mediocre service. I'm not going to bust my tail for some inconsiderate people whose meal I get taxed on when they come in and the have the audacity to not leave a tip, especially a large party like that. I wouldn't make them my first priority, and go at your own pace, obviously rushing to please them isn't going to make a difference monetary-wise so just be short and to the point.

Edit: Math Goddess...whoa, blonde bimbo, how original!! The fact is, if people are assholes and do not tip, than they're not worth my time. I'm a fantastic server, as well as a college nursing student with a 4.0 (bimbo my ***) and yes, every job deals with mean, cruel people, but if you like people like that stepping all over you, keep smiling, don't stand up for yourself. No go play with your protractor and get a life, you ignoramus. :-)
