If you want to save some headaches, you can get units already preset in a frame to set as you would a regular window unit. They come in glass or acrylic. You can get them at Lowes or HD.

Yes, you can do this yourself.

If you want a weather tight seal, then use the mortar. Ive often used glass blocks as decoration indoors, silicone works fine for that, but it will compress over time, with all the weight on it.

You should also be aware that there are 'glass' blocks, and acrylic blocks. Both come in a variety of designs.

Do a dry stack first, to make sure your measurements are good, and follow the instructions that come with the blocks.

First two answers are both great...... I'm going to go with The Bricky guy on the white mortar and proper tools. Other than that there's nothing to it... Good luck!!

ive always used mortar. i think white mortar looks better than gray. keep it stiff and if using the spacers make sure your opening is sized for them. get a 1/4 in. tucking tool to make sure your head joints (verticles) are full. a plexi-glass jointing tool will keep the white mortar from burning when you strike them...take your time , the mortar takes a long time to set...
