I'm a fan of HP laptops. Also like Lenovo (IBM) Thinkpad. Really as long as its not an Apple, I'm happy.

HPs are pretty decent, but really, make sure you get a laptop/notebook computer that has a good amount of memory to store your files, a fairly fast processor, and runs pretty smoothly. Try going to a electronics store and asking the salesman or a specialist. They usually have some good tips for buying a student computer.

Toshiba Satellite A135-S4467 for a thin and light
Alienware Area-51 m9750 or Apple MacBook Pro 2007 for Gaming.
Dell Inspiron 1501 for a budget laptop.
As far as HPs go, I tend to stay away from them because i've seen lots of problems with them as a computer technician.
