1) Make sure both systems use the same Work group name.
Right click on my computer then click on "properties", then click on the "Computer Name" tab. Make sure the work group name is the same and the computer names are different.

2) Manually assign an IP address that is different to each computer. Computer #1 could be 192.168.20.1 Computer #2 could be 192.168.20.2 for example. Make sure the numbers you use are in the range between 192.168.0.1 thru 192.168.255.255 In order to access the Internet again you will have to reset these to automatically obtain IP address and automatically obtain DNS.

3) Reboot both machines. Wait 5 minutes or so.
You should now be able to see Machine #1 from Machine #2 in the Network Neighborhood, or My Network Places. You should also be able to see Machine #2 from Machine #1 in the same way.

4) Once you are able to see the machines in the workgroup view you should be able to play DirectX games via LAN on both computers.

With a crossover cable, both nics should be able to communicate using a network protocol (such as TCP/IP)
If you're looking to do internet sharing you will want to enable Microsoft's Internet Connection Sharing or setup a Proxy/NAT server on the computer with an internet cnonection so it can be shared.

If both PCs are connected to a Router --then assign the IP address that is supported by that router.
Or you can disconnect them from the router and then you'll see both of the computers got IP address assigned automatically.
Use the microsoft file sharing wizard and enable it.
It should work then.

Maybe you should set both NIC to assign IP manually. Refer to the link. Usually i would use 192.68.0.1 and the other just add +1 as the last digit (192.68.0.2).

Then in the game, you should specify the IP you just configured. Use TCP/IP as the protocol not IPX or any other protocol.

Good luck.

just go to:
=local area connection status
=click properties
=click Internet protocol (TCP/IP)
=click properties
=then select Use the following IP address:
-IP address: 192.168.1.3
-Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
-Default gateway: 192.168.1.1

then the different computer is almost the same step but the IP address is different.
-IP address: 192.168.1.5
-Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
-Default gateway: 192.168.1.1
=click ok

then you can enjoy with your Lan Game!!!
