Was this line ever really used in any traditional wedding ceremonies, or was it invented for those in soap-operas and chick-flick movies?

It's quite the device, but I've never seen or heard word of a real-life ceremony using that line.

Yes it exists in wedding ceremonies in real life.It can be a life saver in cases where the bride or the groom is married to someone else and someone speaks up about it to stop the wedding.ect.After someone speaks up the minister will then decide if the wedding will proceed or not.

I have heard it in an actual ceremony but i think it should be taken out. That's got to be the most stressful part of the wedding for the bride and groom! Who knows what psycho ex could have crawled through the bathroom window just for the chance to yell out some wild accusation?

Used back in the day-
- If the couple might have been related
- if the women is pregnant with some else's baby
- If the woman/man was engaged (promise) to another
- If one of the couple was already married to someone else
- If one of the couple was sick and concealing the truth
- Lying about lineage

Basically at this point if someone had info then this was the last moment that you could disclosed the info.

I had a traditional church wedding and the officiating minister did say something to that effect. It was nearly 5 years ago, so hard to remember for sure...

I wish it was. You can have so much fun with that. You have the ability to cause doubt between the bride and groom by saying things like "He's a player. He's got 7 other women, and he's married to 2!" Also, you can try: "She's lying! That kid is my brother's!". That would surely wreck havoc.

I'd like to say it was used in my wedding, but the drugs my ex-wife slipped me before the ceremony made me slightly incoherent.
