Its not a gift card where you swipe it. It is a paper certificate that someone paid the full cash amount for.

Generally it depends on the gift certificate. With so many out there these days, paper and plastic, the rules regarding these also varies.

If the certificate said something like "no cash value" or "not redeemable for cash or change" or anything of that sorts, it is not meant to give change back, which is the way a lot of the paper gift certificates these days run.
You should've had the clerk or the manager explain to you why you wouldn't get any change back. If the clerk was good, they would've told you that you wouldn't be allowed to get change back, and they would've suggested you order something so you could use up the full amount on the card.

As gift cards are becoming more popular, the lenders have come up with their own rules. Even the plastic ones have their rules. Some will say if the money isn't used by XX date, the card will deduct XX amount of money each month until the card is used. Now that sucks. But, usually the time frame for that to happen is a year or two.

I never heard of anyone getting gift certificates to chicken places. Why not do your friend a favor and put some cash in the card so they can buy what they want.

Either way you can't get change back. What you can do though is they may give it back to you and say you have a certain amount left on the card and you can use that towards a later purchase at there store.

Yep, that's the way the system works. You'll have to use it all up. They don't give changes if you meal is paid using gift certificates. I think it's on their website, if I'm not wrong...

if the terms said u arent supposed to receive change, then thats not wrong. but if u are, then i'd say that is definitely not right. cause its still your money, many restaraunts such as fast food joints dont like to use certificates/coupons. they feel as if their losing money. which isn't right/

i think they are supposed to just leave whatever change you shoulda got on the gift certificate because they want you to spend the money there and if they give you change then you could spend it somewhere else
