do you have to buy pistons for a certain motor?
say i have my nissan motor, and it has a 90mm bore, Piston Pin Height 34mm, Piston Dish 2.8cc but the pistons for it cost $600 forged
and then i have found the same thing, only it doesnt specify my nissan's motor for alot less.

I have run into this problem before. The best answer I can give you is to measure and know all of your engines specifications before you buy any parts including pistons. As long as your specifications match aftermarket parts can be used successfully. Depending upon the application of your motor I would make sure all of the parts will interchange with the ones you are taking out of it. I would make sure when you buy pistons that they all weigh the same, they all have the same wristpins, and the ring grooves are all the same depth . I have found that Japanese Imports are best when they are rebuilt with genuine parts from the manufacturers. They may be much more expensive but they will last longer than most aftermarket parts. If you can't afford genuine parts then I would research the alternatives and make a choice that best suits you. I haven't had to put pistons into too many nissans because they stand up. If a person takes care of them and maintains them correctly the body of the car will wear out before the engines will. Good Luck!

You would need pistons that were made to fit your motor, but there are a lot of different companies that make pistons.

It all depends on what you are trying to do to the motor. Do you need forged, or can you go with cast? Aluminum or steel? There is a lot of ways to cut costs, you just have to know what you can get away with using less sturdy parts on.

you do have to buy the right pistons for the engine. If you are boring it out then you need to specify to the parts dealler how much oversize you are boreing. You dont neccasarily need forged pistons unless you really need to have them made from somthing stronger and lighter.Other wise just ring a parts store and give them your car and engine make, year and model and any other setails they ask and they should be able to track down the stock type pistons at a lower price.
