No. Millions of years ago, the moon was much closer to the earth than it is now. It is drifting away, not towards us.

The moon is most certainly moving away from the Earth at about a 1/2 an inch a year or something like that. At some point in the distant future the Moon will sail off on it's own journey without being tied to Earth's gravitational pull.

We'll more than likely all be dead and gone when that happens though.

In the early days of the formation of the Earth and the Moon system, the Moon was much closer than it is today. The tides we see today that are caused by the moon would have been perhaps a hundred times higher than today. More on the order of a tsunami than the gentle tides we experience in this era. As the third answerer said, the Earth has been confirmed to moving away from the Earth. Laser reflectors left on the lunar surface by the Apollo astronauts are used to measure the distance. Laser pulses are regularly sent from Earth to measure the distance and have confirmed that indeed the Moon is moving away from the Earth. One day it will no longer effect our tides and it's stabilizing effect on Earth's rotation causing the planet to wobble to the point where the seasons will be bizarre by today's standard.

No, it won't happen. Actually right now the moon is slowly moving *away* from Earth by about 1.5 inches per year.

No it can't. The moon is actually moving away from us at a rate of about 1.6 inches per year.
