When I think of a knit top, I think it's something that someone knitted, but I bought a shirt today and it was a knit top, but it was totally not knitted.

If you pull the fibers apart slightly, you will see that they are "knitted" together such as someone would knit at home only with a machine so they are a lot tighter and smaller. This is versus a weaved top, which would be fibers going over, under, over, under, etc.

a knit top to me has nothing to do with what our grandmothers did ages ago. Knit tops are like t-shirts. The stuff our grandmothers did are actually sweaters.

t-shirt is the best example I can think of. very very fine weave, usually cotton.

Usually cotton. It doesn't mean that it looks like something your grandmother knitted together.
