If it was converted to r134a there should be a sticker on it stating that fact. One can should do it. The thing is, you do have a leak and all you are doing is throwing away money. The best thing to do, is to have the leak repaired and then have it recharged. That way you won't have to keep doing it all the time. Plus, you could mess up the compressor if you don't know what you are doing.

Take it in and get if fixed right.
that's the best way to do it.

no mancanic here, but have watched my dad 4 sum time and have delt lots with my own veicheles. most of the time i have to tell my hubby wats wrong with one of our veicheles.
i would say;
1- sum cars differ from other cars, so it would depend on each individual car as to how much freon it would take. it also depends on how low your freon is. you can always get extra to be on the safe side, then take the unused back to the store.
2- one way to tell if it has been converted is to see if there are any attachments on the compresser/hose. most of them are little round copper pieces.
3- not sure how often you have to add freon, but if it's a good bite, then you have a leak somewhere - could be a dry hose or a seal leak or compresser-. if you have a leak, you can purchase freon that has a leak sealer in it. in this case, i would only add 1 can of that and then use the regular r134 for the rest that is needed. if you put to much freon with the sealer in it, then you can have trouble with it sealing up too much/stopping up.
4- the best/safest way to add freon is to purchase a pressure gage, this way you will know how much pressure is needed while adding the freon. you can usually purchase the freon, gage and attachments all in one kit. where i live the kits cost around 35.00. if too much freon is added, it can lock the compresser up. once a compresser is locked up, it can hardly ever be freed causing the need to purchase another one.
5- if you know nothing about adding the freon, i suggust getting someone who does know to do it for you. we have never had this to happen, but i have heard that you can cross the lines up or something and it can backfire causing it to explode. like i said, i have only heard this happen.
