My boss offered other employees to work overttime, but not me. Is that unfair? The other people have worked their longer and maybe my boss feel they deserve to get the overttime pay, not me. I've only been there for 6 months. Maybe she feels they are better and harder workers than me and deserves it and not me.

Does a boss have a right to give overttime to whoever she wants to and feels deserves it or should she offer the overttime to everyone, to be fair? What is your opinion?

Yes, a boss CAN pick and choose who works overtime... especially since you were only there for 6 months----most work places have a PROBATIONARY PERIOD that usually lasts several months---maybe you just hadn't been there long enough to have gotten past that period---and no one can usually work overtime if they are on "probation"... maybe the boss felt you should have a little more experience in order to work the overtime.... don't take it personally--- I worked in a government office for 35 YEARS--we had overtime and NEVER did they allow employees with 6 months or less service to work the overtime...wait till next time it is offered... If you are doing a good job and have had good performance evaluations, you SHOULD be asked the next time to work overtime---be greatful for now because the weather is BEAUTIFUL and summer is NOT a fun time to work LONG HOURS....

This is why you need unions.
Yes, with a union the senior employee gets first dibs at overtime. But the next time overtime is offered it goes to the lower man if he wants it. Then works its way back down and back to the top. This way all employees get a share of overtime if they want it, regardless of their seniority or standing with the company. (it wont just go to the boss's suck up cousin).
People gripe about unions, but unions help make a fair workplace.

It is fair. The other people may have proven that they deserve the overtime.

There is no law that says the boss can't offer overtime as they se fit.

There might be company rules.

Unless there is some specified standard for overtime, which you would have to meet, then overtime is typically discretionary. The boss can give overtime based on seniority, or who she thinks does the better job, or just because she likes working with someone else better.

When you were hired, you should have been told of the "perks" that came with your job. Yes,the boss has the right to offer overtime to anyone he/she chooses whenever it's available.

For me it is unfair...
all employees have a rigth to have an overtime...
boss is only one whogive you salary
she is not the one who worh late
even new employees can have an over time
why the old cant?
your boss is wrong
is made discrimination for his employees..

Seniority is an accepted basis for offering 'perks.`.
Also, since overtime is more expensive, he may want only the more experienced workers.
He has the right.
