Now Bush is trying to intimidate presidential candidates in order to silence criticism of his failures in the fight against terrorism.

Americans have a right to speak their minds--whether the Bush regime likes it or not.

(sigh) OK--I'll spell it out: Even if you are naive enough to Believe Bush is sincere--my point applies. One of the reasons for encouraging political candidates to make their positions known is so that we CAN tell which ones are irresponsible. If we'd known what Bush was really like--we'd never have been dumb enough to elect him.

Sure--some of these comments may tick off a few foreign leaders--so what? They aren't going to care unless the person is elected--and if the comments aren't jsutified--its up to the voters not to elect that person. If the comments are warrented--then what foreign leaders think doesn't mean squat. Either way--we need to know where these people stand.

Well, tough... if the state department and Bush of course.. do not like what the candidates are saying that is too bad. It is what the public wants and needs to hear...anyone, form either party who is willing to tell us the truth and to actually accomplish something. Bush has done neither.

They are allowed to say what they want.. this is a free country, with free speech.

The problem with the candidates, is that they think they are the next President. If they were good candidates they would be talking about what their agendas are if they are elected.
Not butting in on things they have no say in yet.
There are too many people trying to act like the commander an chief. If they do not have, or can not show respect for the position of President, how good of a job do you think they will be able to do?
I want a real leader to lead this country, but there isn't a real leader in the whole bunch.
You are right about Americans have the right to speak there mind, but they also need to take responsibility for what they say!

How many people have only just woken up to the fact that 'Bush' and 'free speech' are mutually exclusive terms? Furthermore, demeaning the opposition by playing the 'patriot' card has been a trick of dictators for many centuries.

In no way am i taking up for Bush or anything he does but i totally understand why he is concerned about presidential candidates speaking out. I would hate to see a US embassy bombed and solders killed just because they want to win the election.

"Those who wish to hold office can speak for themselves and whoever is elected in 2008 and comes into office in 2009 will then be in a position to talk about what they intend or plan to do," said deputy spokesman Tom Casey, a career foreign service officer.

so we are not supposed to know their position on foreign policy until AFTER they are elected???

Yes, they have the right to speak their minds, but, by saying some of the things they have been saying, they are alienating foreign countries that already have trouble trusting us.

The difference is that these people are decision-makers, especially if they win. Do you really think that Saudi Arabia is going to deal with Tom Tancredo if he is elected and threatening to bomb Mecca? Or, that Pakistan will open up to Barack Obama, who has already threatened military action in Pakistan? If these people already hate us, why should we allow these naive politicians to say stuff that will only make them hate us more?

I read the story and the wanna-bees are, in fact, pouring gas on the fire for their own political gain....invading Pakistan, using nukes, bombing Muslim holy sites.....and you are critical of the Bush administration policies? Get real.

I find it sad that our political candidates have to be reminded to avoid what a few years ago would have been considered despicable and unpatriotic behavior. i find it shameful that our citizens are numb enough to tolerate it.

use nukes in afghanistan
invade allies
nuke mecca

Yea, thats really what the world needs to hear right now.

And you whine about Bush saying " bring it on "

they came down on Tancredo too. When the rhetoric is damaging foreign relations with key allies, the state department has every right to ask them to tone it down.
