Where in NY? Come on over and say HI!!
Why not read the ultimate NY horror book - true too. The Amityville Horror. I used to live around the corner from the house. Very cool story. Good introduction to NY LOL ...
I would also suggest The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. Scariest book I ever read. And Ghost Story by Peter Straub - a close second.
Personally I wouldnt recommend Ted Dekker. I hate his work. The man cannot write a complete sentence. I read House and it was so bad I took it back to B and N and got my money back. Only time I ever did that with a book in my whole life. His so called shocking ending was a total snooze and his scary stuff was a total laugh.
Dean Koontz is great. Very scary stuff. My favorite is Odd Thomas - not so scary but great. Dean Koontz can write!
Stephen King is great too. Cell was pretty good. If the guy wasn't a Red Sox fan, King would be awesome.
If you are headed to upstate NY, look for a book called Spook Rock by Pasquale J. Morrone. It takes place in upstate NY near Ghent. Spook Rock is a real place. Local legend kind of place. I have been there. The book is very scary stuff. I know the author personally. He is kinda scary too (not really = I just like to tease him! He thinks I am scary too!)
Enjoy NY ... I don't know where you are headed, but it is HOT as heck here in the city area. Pax - C

I'm a Stephen King fan too, with my favorites being The Stand, Misery, It and probably Cell (because it's so relevant to today's society - if you haven't read it, once you do, you might know a few people you wish were pulsed...)
Darren Shan's series, Cirque du Freak, is YA horror. I've only read one so far and it was interesting.
Scott Westerfeld wrote two books, Peeps and The Last Days. I wouldn't really consider them horror, though Peeps is full of really ugly/disgusting descriptions of different parasites. Peeps and The Last Days are about parasite positives, or vampires.
Wait! A few other Stephen King: The Shining and Salem's Lot. And Pet Sematary, too. He has written some good ones, hasn't he?
For more human type horror, what about something like Silence of the Lambs? Helter Skelter is one I started and couldn't take (this is Charles Manson). Maybe even Kiss the Girls? Sort of heading into serial killer/mass murderer territory here. I read Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Hit Man (think that's it) and the horror is real (and pretty gross).
Stuck now. If I think of any more, I'll be back.

Have you ever read "The Haunting of Hill House" by Shirley Jackson? It's not a recent book, but still scary if you let yourself get into it! I also really liked the book "Follow" by A.J. Matthews. I'll warn you the ending is a little weak, but I would still read it again. Really freaky.

Have you ever heard of Ted Dekker? He's a Christian writer, but the books aren't trying to get people to be Christians, the books are based on good and evil type scenarios. They're semi-scary but really good reads. The book I read (House) was excellent.

Have you ever read any Dean Koontz books? They're pretty good sci-fi/horror books. My favorites are Velocity and False Memory.
