Okay so lately i've changed. I stopped shopping at hollister and a&f (it was a dark time [;). now i shop at hot topic, journeys, delia*s, PacSun and forever 21. i bought some converse and i painted my nails black. My dad flipped on me! he yelled at me to take the nail polish off because he said it was 'gothic'.He even went to the drug store to buy me a huge bottle of nailpolish remover! MY ROOM IS BRIGHT GREEN & PINK! you can't get more ungothic than that. & what if i did become gothic?! would that make me a bad person?!? I like screamo/emo music & such, but my dad just won't except me (he doesn't even know what emo is anyway). My dad is just a fool. He won't let me be myself! advice on how to solve this problem?

Rebel. It's your duty as a teenager. You need to venture out and learn from anything you do. Black nail polish shouldn't lead you to horrible things. Just don't become a wiccan or anything drastic like that. As long as you are true to your heart and you aren't following some lame fad just because, then you should be fine. I listen to screamo/posthardcore music, but from the way I dress/look, you could never tell. Just don't let it affect your true self. Don't change for anyone else.

Good luck with the dad thing, I went through the same thing with the black nailpolish!

I find that when you're wearing black, short nails do look better, but black does give the illusion of shorter nails so it's ok to grow them out a bit more. Most people agree that black on long nails is a bit odd, I've tried it and it looks fine as long as they're not too long. Keep them square if you're going to wear them long.

The best way to handle this is to show him how mature you are. Just tell your dad calmly that just because you paint your nails black does not make you a "goth." Plenty of celebrities have done it on the red carpet (Kiera Knightly, to name one)

Just explain it's a way of "expressing your individuality" and that it's just nail polish, it's not like you went out and tatooted "I <3 goth boys" on your forehead or anything like that.

Keep it calm when you explain yourself, and he'll see that you're willing to try to understand his point of view, even if you don't agree with it.

One more thing... avoid wicked witch fo the west nails...

If you paint them black, make sure you keep them pretty short, or you'll look like something you'd want to drop a house on... lol jk

Well i kind of agree with your dad on this one. I mean you are going to look rediculous and like a total poser. hes probably not as ignorant as you think, hes probably trying to save you from some serious embarassment. besides, even if you think its your 'style' to wear black polish now, humor your dad a little bit. he obviously gives you a lot (shelter, money to buy those new clothes, food, etc etc) so if he doesnt like you doing something as simple as painting your nails, you can live with that. Paint them white, or dark red. its the same difference.

Maybe find a picture of a celebrity who had black polish. I know Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton did, but you might want to find a more respectable person lol. That will show him that black polish does not equal goth.

1st...delia*s is NOT goth! & niether is pacsun...its more surfer chick! but i have friends who sound like you & one of thier parents have flipped out too. but just tell him that you'll always be a good person & that its just the way you want to be. ask him to let you try it out for about a week & see how your personality changes or things like that & then see what he has to say.

hope it all works out!

Um I shop at everyplace you just said.
The preppy and journey's delia's and pacsun. I'm myself. Nothing else. My room is the same color as yours and I like how I am.
Preppies can shop at any stores they want, like me. So tell you dad that.
