How much is a life worth to you?

1. Evil

This is a baby that is being murdered by his/her own mother. I could never in a million years understand torturing my child to death - and yet millions do every year.

This is the biggest Holocaust the world has ever allowed.

So simplistic.
Something can be bad AND necessary.
The simple fact is, there are legitimate reasons for abortions. Some fetuses have severe deformities that prevent their viability. Some women run a severe risk of death due to a pregnancy. Some women are not emotionally or financially ready to have a child.
Abortion is not an easy choice. It is not a pleasant choice. But, it may be the RIGHT choice.

The religious right has been against abortion for a long time. But, why would they be against birth control? Birth control reduces the number of abortions by preventing conception in the first place. No conception, no pregnancy, no abortion, no problem. Or is the goal of the religious right really to stop people from having sex?

Abortion and birth control have some very positive effects on society. To begin with, the crime rate has dropped. Check out the book "Freakenomics" for the whole story on that one. Also, two of the most accurate predictors of economic success for women in all societies are education level, and the age at which they start having children. The more education a woman has, and the later she has children, the more likely she will have a good paying job, be a better parent, and be a productive member of society. In contrast, the less education a woman has, and the earlier she has a child, the more likely she will have a low paying job (if any job at all), more likely she will be on government support, the more likely she or her child will be involved in criminal activity, more likely to be abused, more likely to abuse drugs and/or alcohol, and she is much less likely to earn as much money as a higher educated woman.

So, while abortion may be bad for the fetus, it may be good for society overall.

The pro-choice groups' motto has always been, "safe, legal, and rare."
To that effect, pro-choice groups are taking direct steps to ensure that every baby born is wanted. By encouraging sex education before puberty, and having readily available birth control, the demand for abortions decreases.
If I told you I knew a way we could reduce the number of abortions by 90%, would you be in favor of it?
Probably.
If I told you it involved teaching kids about the facts of life around age six, would you still be for it?
Probably not.
But, that's what Sweden and Denmark are doing, and their teen pregnancy and abortion rates are about one tenth of US rates. Maybe we should be looking at programs that actually work a lot better than ours than be a slave to our moral beliefs that ignore the reality that people have sex.

One last thought. Statistically speaking, a woman is still more likely to die due to complications to pregnancy than she is from an abortion.

Abortion = bad; however that goes for the failed "abstinence" program as well.

Why not take a hard lesson from our friends in the Netherlands and embrace universal access to contraception and comprehensive sex education and REDUCE both the number of teen pregnancies and teen abortions?

We only have the highest teen pregnancy rate on the planet...

Number 1. That also depends on the reasons for the abortion. If someone wants to have sex and don't want to get pregnant, use a birth control method. Also remember about STD. If the abortion is for a medical reason that can jeopardize the life of the mother, then that is another story.

Its no ones decision except the mother. Period no argument. Along with the joy of being capable of producing yet another baby into an out of control world, that really doesn't need that many more , the mother must also weigh the value of that child's life , example: profound disability, etc. Sorry you and I don't get to stick our noses into it. There are some good answers here tonight , but as usual the poor sheep that can't stray from church teachings propaganda)have to always bring the level of discourse down to fantasy.

2 through 4. My mother (born in 1930) remembered the time before abortion was legal, and from her stories I've always felt we don't want to go back to those days.

Work towards getting young people to understand and be responsible with birth control. The best thing we can do is eliminate the need to have abortions by preventing unwanted pregnancies.
