Iam assuming that you are referring to a house plant and not a shrub or bush in the landscape.. Here you go with signs that you are over watering your houseplant.
1.) Leaves turn yellow, droop and fall off.
2.) Stops growing, (failure to produce new growing shoots)
3.) Mold forms on top of potting soil around stem of plant.
4.) Soil "gnats" are flying all around the pot.
5.) Soil smells "sour" after watering.
6.) Tips of leaves look burned and turn brown before dropping.

depends on the plant, but usually the leaves will turn yellow. If this happens just stop watering until the soil completely dries out. Normally an indoor plant only needs a drink once a week. Set it in your sink and fill it up and let it drain completely. Make sure the top 2-3 inches of soil are dry before watering even if a week has passed. Also, remember that it is better to under water than over water. A plant that is thirsty will droop a little, but not be harmed and you will know that it is time to water.
Good luck

If its wilting with leaves dropping and the soil is wet, then its probably overwatered.
