just a quick question. if you dont have the $ in your checking acc. and you use your debit card @ a gas pump. will the pump shut off if youve used all the $ in your account or will it keep going and consider it something of a bounced check? little nervous here, just dont wanna be paying outrageous bounced check fees..

The pump will not shut off. Your bank will charge you the amount you owe plus the bounced check fee. If you have money in a savings account, some banks will automatically transfer over the money that will cover your charges without charging you any fees. Usually this is an option that you have to sign up for though.

Congratulations, you get to pay those bounced check fees.

Frequently gas stations put a hold on a larger amount, just to make sure it will clear. When the transaction is completed the hold is suppose to be released; however, it doesn't always happen. This means that if you have $20 in your account and pump $10 in gas, you might get a bounced check fee because the gas station put a $50 hold on your account.

If you're going to use a debit card, don't run your account balance so far down.

In Canada, Bank cards are directly linked to your bank, you can not use more than you have..In the USA, these bank cards are linked directly to your bank but are typically secured with a VISA or something....so yeah you will likely pay a service charge for overdrawing your account, plus interest for the borrowed amount. Just pay it back asap.

the pump won't stop - it doesn't know that you don't have funds - if you have on-line banking and have a way to transfer some funds in you should try to do it.

Great question, the only way one would know for sure is by experience, since it hasn't happened to me, I don't have the answer.
