I have to agree with the others that posted since you asked specifically about Native American spirit guides. However, they were not the only ones that worked with animal energies. Tribal cultures world wide did. If you aren't looking specifically for Native American you might want to read Ted Andrews' book Animal Speak. I keep it around for whenever I have an unusual animal encounter.

I have just recently begun learning Native American astrology from a friend, having learned only of late that my biological great-grandfather was Cree Indian.
My sign is that of the cougar and I think it may explain why I've had a lifelong fascination for these extraordinary creatures. I once knew a vet who kept a cougar (it was found as an abandoned "pet") at his practice; I used to stop by frequently to visit the cougar. She electrified me; I felt such a strong connection to her and now I know why.
I'm rather new at this, but perhaps your Native American astrological sign animal could serve as your spirit guide. You may wish to explore this further with books on this subject by Sun Bear...good luck!

The animal chooses you. You see your spirit animal through visions. Also the animal warns you of danger, protects you, and helps you through troubles.

Your animal guides choose you and your spirit guides were decided upon before you began your journey.
You can meditate on finding and communing with them though

from what i have read neither choose, you are connected from birth, you just have to find which animal is your spirit guide, you need to do a spirit search (not sure that is what it is called though)

YOUR tribal ELDERS handle this.
I can not tell you any more than this. It is not something to discuss ONLINE or with people OUTSIDE your tribe.
IF you are not affiliated with a tribe, do not TAKE what does not belong to you. Show respect.

Their total purpose is to warn you of forth coming danger and to lead you away from it.... And to put you into a protective area where you can be protected by nature itself.................. They are not vengeful creatures and no they will not seek revenge in you honor..... That would take a totally different type of creature to do that........................................................
