be stopped? Could all of our tax dollars then be used for what they were originally intended? Or is this just pie in the sky thinking?

Earmarks, the currency of congress. It's a way they reward themselves for their inflated egos. Earmarks along with lobbyists should be outlawed. It seems we have twenty nine billion worth in this years budget. I'm looking forward to seeing what is going to happen with Senator Stevens. I saw him one day berating congress for trying to derail his bridge to nowhere. He threatened the rest of congress saying if his pork didn't go through, he would make sure nobody would get theirs through either.

Pie in the sky, I think. The supposed job of government is to do the things collectively that we cannot do individually. As long as people think their pork project is important, they will expect their reps at the capitol to work toward that goal. Anyone who does not perform will be ousted. They are slaves to their own ambition.

Pie in the sky, for sure.
As long as we have politicians more interested in their own ego than they are in the working class people who put them in office - we'll have grafts and bribes (or earmarks, if you prefer.)

They don't necessarily need to be stopped--they just need to be completely transparent. By that I mean that they need to be in the bill when it is voted on (not just as a miscellaneous amount, as it has been), and they need to have the legislators name who asks for it with it.

Yeah, stop the pork because it's non-kosher!

(Just kidding)
