dodgeman is right brand does matter, generally the clearer out of the bottle the better it is. stay away from penz and quaker, they have heavy amounts of parafin while good for coating bearings, this often spells disaster if your engine ever runs hot. while one person had luck with slick 50, ive found it to be more of a gimmick. if your buning oil use engine restore. it make take 2 oil changes to get you back in shape, but anything like that in an engine you dont want it to work to fast. as far as thickness. 5w-30. personally prefer valvoline good compromise between price and quality

We had a 86 Taurus with over 275K miles. Changed the oil every 3K with 5-30. Never had any problem with engine. Never had the engine apart. When it was sold, there were no ticks or knocks in the engine, it still purred like a new one. Changed the plugs at 100K and they still looked new.

if you want a real good oil that will help the engine last a lot longer in it id use Mobil one ,synthetic oil, they make it in all weights ,and its the best oil made on the market,it will also help the car get better gas mileage, because it lubricates a lot better than conventional oils do,its expensive though around 5 bucks a quart, but it will help the engine to last a lot longer,i use it ,and never any problems from it at all, good luck on it.

as i recall ford recommends a 5W-30 weight oil. as for what brand that is up to you. i have used pennzoil, quaker state, valvoline, castrol, moble 1, shell rotella, and a number of others over the years. the brand name oils are all good, and i prefer a synthetic oil. i havent used it yet, but i plan to one day to use royal purple synthetic oil. i have friends that have used it and found that they like it.

Generally...

10-40

Brand really doesn't matter.

**************

If the car has high mileage... 20-50.

**************

If the engine runs OK, but seems to be using oil... Try a can of Slick 50 with your next oil change.

I put slick50 in a car that had 175,000 miles, and it cured the car of using a quart of oil every 500 miles. At 225,000 I blew a head gasket and took the engine out for rebuild. (200,000+ and needs something major... rebuild it... or junk it) Micrometer readings before "hot tank" and after indicated that something (slick 50... almost guaranteed) had made up for 40/1000 of cylinder wear.

check your owners manual and use the grade and sae type it calls for. stay away from the cheap oils like havoline or pennzoil or quacker state. i use valvoline or exxon in my vechicles shell is good. my motto is if mal-wart sells it it is the cheapest thing they can find.let it be.

brand is unimportant..a good quality 10w40 in summer or winter will do unless you live in an area where it gets -40 then use 5w40...
