My neighbor has been avoiding the city tax assessor for months....the reason I know this is that the tax man actually knocked on my door one day looking for him.

There are times I know for a fact my neighbor is home (as I've seen him enter his house) and when this tax man comes by, he doesnt' open the door for him (the guy will stand out there knocking on the door for a good 10 minutes at a time)

Last week, the tax man approached him while he was mowing his lawn. I could hear through my window my neighbor actually pretend he was the 'owner's brother in law' and explained how he could not let him into the house to assess as the owners were 'away'

I'm disgusted by this...I have to pay my fair share of taxes, shouldn't he?

hahaha...
I worked in real estate for years, although not currently, but the law hasn't changed in this regard.
If your neighbor doesn't allow the tax assessor in, the tax assessor has every right to assume that your neighbor has installed all gold fixtures. The tax assessor will tax at an extremely high rate, and then the neighbor will have to go to the city to schedule an appointment to get it adjusted. This is funny to me...I know that the guy will be hit with such a high tax bill unless the tax assessor is just a nice guy.
Go ahead and tell the tax assessor that he is hiding! I would love to see his face when he gets his bill.

What kind of strange place do you live in where the tax assessment is made only after consultation with the owner? Around these parts the assessment is made without the owner's consent, and then when the bill is 90 days overdue, the sherriff comes out and claims the property for the government to be sold on auction, none of which requires any discussion on the part of the owner.

Taxes in this country are a crime they are so high! I can commiserate with people trying to reduce their tax burden legally, but that doesn't sound very honest. The best way to reduce our tax burden is to stop voting for tax increases or politicians who vote for them! That's why I'm voting for Ron Paul in '08, he's the best candidate (IMHO) for reducing taxes.

Taxes could be 1/10th of what they are today if we didn't have such crazy spending, waste, and corruption...

If your neighbor's a jerk and he's somehow been a pain in the @ss to you in the past, then by all means report him. Otherwise, I don't see how it's your problem. The IRS and other tax departments are a contemptible bunch of lowlifes who are much like the old Gestapo and communist secret police - they largely depend on citizens ratting each other out. There is no moral imperative to do their work for them.

No one likes a snitch. It really does not affect you in any way. If you are mad that he is avoiding taxes while you are paying them, then you should take out your personal vendetta against others such as money launderers as well. Hey, why not fly to the Cayman islands and yell at them because they pay laughable amounts of tax. Mind your own business, let other's live the way they want. If you hate taxes, i suggest you get a few tips from him to help you avoid your's as well.

Why do they need to get inside the house? I live in Florida and they don't do that here. They just make the assessment from a drive-by.

Legally speaking, you have absolutely no duty to report him. However, can your conscience live with that? If he isn't my client, you bet I'd turn him in!
