People as a whole are not committing crime to put food on the table. More then assuming that low income produces crime look at the criminal in action. Start as I have done. Go to a court house and observe what kinds of people are hanging around the house. Try to be discreet about listening to those around as to why they are there. Go into the court house chambers and listen to the defense lawyers, the kinds of crime, the excuses for the crime committed. You won't here someone say they were trying to pay a mortgage, buy medicine, feed hungry children.
I grew up in the ghettos of New York City. Crime was not committed because of low income. Crimes were committed because of opportunity, boredom, and because of lack of respect to other individuals. Private property was viewed as equal opportunity, a free for all.
The answer for crime prevention is not more money. The answer to crime lies leadership that is nonexistent. The answer to crime is to reintroduce morals. The answer to crime is to remove the "I am a victim of society, its societies fault". And introduce a sense of guilt, shame and remorse. Criminals today apologize not because of a sense of guilt or shame but because of being caught. Sorry my reply steered off in a different direction. I just felt that you needed a different outlook. From someone that was in the trenches.

I would probably go to some sociology journals and search for research on crime. Most research I've seen summarized has included, as one of the independent variables, income level.

Do your research by walking through some tough neighborhoods and talking to people instead of opening up those silly books. Blasted professors don't really know a thing.

I have no specialty in this area, but that really sounds like a Sociology question....money is money, but it's how people think about it and react to it that affects things like crime.
