I have a hard time believing it...have you priced Fancy Feast lately?
I think a more logical explanation for a senior citizen who stocked up on cat food and nothing else would be, that this person's cat was all they had in this world...and they were more inclined to feed their cat than themselves.
Also consider that many elderly people lose their sense of smell, and therefore, their appetites. Have you ever seen an obese old person? They're all tiny!

It's probably true sometimes. You can get cheap tuna, ramen noodles or other food for about the same as cheap cat food though. Cat food isn't really bad for you, just smells like crap. Fry it up in a pan, a little salt and pepper, maybe some cheese...

Sadly it may be true.Maybe the older people eat it because they have dementia or some other mental disorder not because they are poor.Raman Noodle is like 10 cents a pack cheaper than cat food.It would seems they could get some food from food banks and churches if they couldn't afford food.

It is not a myth... I have witnessed this... and many who do not eat every day... or do not take medicine as they should...using only half as much to make it last... I have known some who caught birds... and yes, cats... for food... it happens far more than is widly reported... ask any amblence people with a lot of time in the job... ask any cop... or social worker... any who, for one reason or another enter the homes of the elderly poor... YES... it happens. A Lot!

~When i was a young girl i worked in a shop where we home delivered the groceries. We had this old couple come in and buy cans and cans of the cheap no name variety cat foods.....
She did not own a cat.
When we realised what was going on we organised for her to get meals on wheels delivered three times a day....So its no urban myth.

That is not a myth, That happens to be a true fact... And when you are poor cat food is a lot cheaper then most human food is and that is a very sad fact but true never ther less.... There are some poor people that would fight over a can of cat or dog food.... And in such a rich country that we live in that should never be the case... But its the truth that shall set you free...................................................................................

Brandi24 has the most accurate answer. I work in a retirement home and dementia is the most logical answer. One of my residents has dementia and I have known this guy for over 6 months 40 hours a week. He is the sweetest senior citizen I know but, every day, to him, it is the first time we have met.

No. It is cheaper to get human food than cat food, and you can even get human food for free if you go to a soup kitchen.
