Is there a safe repellent to keep the deer from eating my flower garden. I would never want to harm them and I think it's so cool they visit my yard late at night but the flowers are a feast for them. HELP!!!! Thanks to all who answer. Peace!

Some deer-repellent concoctions include mint oils often combined with pepper and garlic, cloves and cinnamon, or citrus.

Mix one tablespoon of liquid dish detergent with one ounce of hot sauce in one litre of water and spray directly on plants which deer have been nibbling.

Hang a bar of soap wrapped in cheesecloth, on stakes. If you put on bushes uncovered, this could attract rodents who will can chew on the soap & the bark (if soap drips on it). The rain and humidity keeps the soap fragrant. Use one about every ten feet or near special plants. The tallow(animal fatty acids) smell repells deer, but if it smells like coconut...it may attract them.

Hanging human hair in bags of nylon or cheesecloth is a repellent suggested by: http://www.uvm.edu/pss/ppp/articles/deerdeter.html
It needs to be replaced every 2 weeks.

Mix one whole egg with a quarter cup of water and mix well. Pour the mixture into a pump bottle and spray it on your plants. This deterrent will withstand light rains because the egg sticks to the leaves. It's used to turn off the deers. Hopefully it won't turn off your neighbors. Interplant deer-repelling plants throughout the garden: Perennial herbs such as artemisia, tansy, and yarrow and culinary herbs such as mint, thyme, tarragon, oregano, dill, and chives .

You can plant a border of lilacs or some other shrub deer won't eat so they'll go somewhere else to eat.
Good luck! Hope this helps.

Did you know? Deer will avoid double fencing, spaced 3-4 feet apart. They are afraid of getting caught between the two fences, and will move on in search of an easier meal.

Netting Sheets and Tree Bags- Here's a very effective control method. A tree bag can be used year round, protecting trees and shrubs in winter from roaming deer. Their green color lets them blend into the natural setting. The only downside is they are just 3 feet in diameter, limiting their use to shrubs, and smaller trees. Netting sheets and be used on larger trees, and as a cover for flowers and vegetables. Long lasting, makes the investment worthwhile.

Buy Pest Netting

Baby Powder- A few gardeners I know swear by this trick. Sprinkle baby powder lightly over the leaves. Deer will then leave the plant alone. Like other repellents, it needs to be re-applied regularly.

Fox Urine- Spray the urine of natural predators around

I've seen deer repellent products but I don't know if or how well they work so I can't recommend any.
What I did was mix an egg white with water and put it into an old spray bottle. I sprayed my hostas with the mixture then I sprinkled cayanne pepper on them. The egg white helped make the pepper stick to the leaves but I had to reapply the mixture after it rained.
I assume the deer took one taste and decided to leave my hostas alone because I haven't seen any signs of anyone nibbling my plants since then.

Ps
I can't take credit for this idea because I got it on the Internet.

I had the same problem when I first moved into deer territory. I decided to go with deer resistant plants and have not had a problem since. It seems like you are plating flowers that they must love. You either have to put deer mesh around your garden or plant flowers they usually will not eat.

Safe and inexpensive........

Sprinkle baby powder on you plants. When the deer munch on your garden this will dry their mouths, after a few visits they will seek other munch ables. This also keeps rabbits away. Also you could try spreading some moth balls around in the garden. If you have pets or kids, put them inside the shrubs or under the mulch.

Is there a male person in your life? The absolute best natural mammal deterrent is male urine. The testosterone in the pee is a territorial fence. It really works. Have a guy urinate around the border of your garden, at a time he will not be arrested, or have him pee in a container you can pour around your garden. I know it sounds silly, but I work in a greenhouse and we are very organic and this is the best thing.

Our organic farmers use grape koolaid (unsweetened) mixed in a spray bottle with a few drops of soap. The soap washes off the food yet helps it stick to the plants. It is so bitter the animals won't nibble.
