How can so many people be so wrong. Great Britain and the United Kingdom are two different things.
Great Britain consists of England, Wales, Scotland and also includes a number of outlying islands such as the Isle of Wight, Anglesey, the Isles of Scilly, the Hebrides and the island groups of Orkney and Shetland. It does NOT include the Isle of man or the Channel Islands and in doing so is the largest Island of the British Isles.
The United Kingdom, is a country and a sovereign state. It comprises the Island of Great Britain (explained above), the north-east part of Ireland (Northern Ireland) and many small local Islands.

Is U.S geography and politics knowledge this awful? Its like asking if the U.S and America is the the same and being given the answer that the U.S includes Mexico and Patagonia. Great Britain is a geographical term generally referring to the larger of the British Isles (This is also a geographical term including North and South Ireland). The United Kingdom is a political term referring to Scotland, England, Wales (Spelt WALES!) and Northern (but not Southern) Ireland.

Great Britain covers most of the British Isles. GB is comprised of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Each have their individual capital cities.
GB is often referred to as the "UK" or "United Kingdom," however, this is a shorter name for the same thing... which is really the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
