For every 3.73 times the drive shaft goes around the wheel goes around once. That ratio is the beginning of the "low speed" rear end ratio's. Basically the smaller the # the slower the motor has to turn at speed. I've got 3.89's at 60 mph my motor is turning at 3200 rpm. Could be why I get 6 mpg around town, hmm?

it means that for every 1 revolution of the rear tires, the engine will be 3.73 revolutions. Great for performance and towing, bad for fuel economy , unless it had an over drive transmission.
