"Stupid," as with any other descriptive adjective, is dependent on the subjective opinion of a perceiver. It's usually assumed that a consensus is reached when an overwhelming majority of individuals decide whether a question is stupid or not.

Objectively, there is no "stupid" or "excellent" question since they are based entirely on perspective. However, there are definitely questions that are reasonably valid and those that are downright illogical, thus "nonsense." Beware of sophisms.

Yes there are stupid questions? The definition of a stupid question is one asked by a person who already knows the answer. These people are really just wanting to hear themselves talk, boost there own ego to see how many fools come up with what they already know is the only answer they will accept or to condescend towards the person they ask the question. The key to identifying stupid questions is to read into it whether there is sincerity from the person asking. On this site there are alot of stupid questions. So if this community is to be philosophically sound, there needs to be people who take it seriously and those who really want to provide helpful ideas to those asking. Respect in asking and answering questions has to rule, not just the points. o.k.

I know a stupid question.

"Am I pregnant? I missed my period(it was SUPPOSED to be 3 weeks ago, and I'm always nauseas." THAT'S a stupid question. lol

Yes, of course there can be stupid questions. Many people just ask questions to get people's attention.

As for this "meaty" answer, I will just keep babbling on so you have something to read and to entertain you.

Stupid questions contain of mis-spellings and what not.

Some other stupid questions....

-Do sugar cookies have sugar in them?
-Can a flower grow?
-How many feet do you have?

And so on.

As for you, only you can decide what questions are stupid becuase everyone has their own opinion.

Ya know what I think you should do!! Go answer all the questions you can and all your answers should consist of are, "This is a stupid question" or "This isn't a stupid question"

Now I KNOW this is best answer quality!!

P.S. This is not a stupid question

Hmmm. Of course it is an undeniable truth- Not all questions are created equal. Some are very good and some are very bad,
However, even the very bad ones can be salvaged just by rephrasing the sentence.

If I looked at a question, I would attempt to envision the thoughts of the asker. What made her /him think that thought? What initiated it?

When you forgive the asker for phrasing faults, spelling mistakes, conjugation, poor choice of words etc, heck, you can see the genius of the person behind the dumb question!!

In case i forget- my answer to your question is- "There is no such thing as a stupid question"

We usually conceive a question from an observation before we begin our in depth study. and what makes a question stupid is in the learning of how things work. For example; A snake has just opened it's mouth showing the sharp teeth, but you don't know they are sharp, so you stick your finger in the mouth, the jaws clamp down on the finger. ( ouch) That was truly a dumb thought question, but the person would not have known what the dumb part was untill after the bite which hurt very much and may have even killed the person.

The definition of a "stupid" question would be an entirely subjective matter, and being that we are imperfect entities (due to the nature of our existence of composition) such a judgement derives from questionable authority.

I love this question!!!!!!
I agree some of the questions I have seen here do make you wonder
In this case it's like saying there is no such thing as a killer gun, you know Guns don't kill people, people using guns kill people.
so I would have to say there are no stupid questions, just stupid people asking stupid things.

Possibly not.

One could invoke the C E M Joad defence and say it all depends on exactly what you mean by "stupid".

There are certainly ones that get close.
"Where was the Korean war fought?" for example.
(from Y!A, history section)

But sometimes apparently stupid questions have more depth than appears at first sight (even if perhaps by accident?)
How about "Who is buried in Grant's tomb?"

Hmmm. No i guesse theres not a "stupid" question. there are "obvious" questions. like what is 1+1. But it all depends on how smart or the oppinion of the person.
