A porch monkey is a derogatory term for african americans and other minorities present in the Southern US
It is a much broader term nowadays, describing anyone who makes a habit of sitting on the house's front porch, no basis on the ethnicity of the person.

Back in the 1800's, before there was electricity to light our homes, people would buy a "porch monkey" to light their porches. It was usually a bronze sculpture of a small monkey dressed like a jockey, holding a small oil lamp. I would suppose that the racial overtones to "porch monkey" originated during that time. But a "porch monkey" really is a legitimate object, even though many short-minded racist people have chosen to make the term a very well-known, and very UGLY referance.

The term is a derogatory slur directed at people in low income neighborhoods, who frequently are seen hanging out , socializing on their porches for lack of other entertainment. I think it sad however, that hanging out with one's own family/peers without a t.v. on and finding things to do that don't cost money is actually viewed by more priveledged folk as "backwards".

Wrong The term was started in the plantation days in the south when a man had worked to the age of retiring the plantation owners would give him a job of setting on the front porch and announcing who was driving up the drive his duty was to help the ladies out of the buggy the name was given to him by the other black people still working on the plantation it helps to read and understand History before posting some BS

I heard that it was a derogatory term for Portuguese or Portuguese-speaking Cape Verdean people. That was according to someone who lived in Fall River Mass where there are many of them and prejudice is high. The first part of the name comes from its sounding like the first part of Portuguese.

It is a derogatory term for an African American, but it's provenance is beyond me.
