The formula for calculating this is (n)(n+1)/2 where n is the number you are counting up to.
So, the answer is 1000*1001/2 = 500*1001 = 500500.

Note: this formula works for any number, so for example the sum of numbers from 1 to 40 is 40*41/2 = 20*41 = 820.
