There are many women with proven leadership abilities. Other nations have had successful women presidents. (see http://www.guide2womenleaders.com/index.html) And frankly, recent male presidents haven't shown us much.

You're right. There are many qualified women who could be president. I'm not worried about that this year because Ron Paul is running. ...and get this:

He has never voted to raise taxes.
He has never voted for an unbalanced budget.
He has never voted for a federal restriction on gun ownership.
He has never voted to raise congressional pay.
He has never taken a government-paid junket.
He has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch.
He voted against the Patriot Act.
He voted against regulating the Internet.
He voted against the Iraq war.
He does not participate in the lucrative congressional pension program.
He returns a portion of his annual congressional office budget to the U.S. treasury every year.
Congressman Paul introduces numerous pieces of substantive legislation each year, probably more than any single member of Congress.

Let's hold off on the women for now. This guy, Ron Paul, is incredible and we should seize the moment!

That's not an easy question to answer, because many of the better candidates for president are governors and, to a lesser extent, members of congress, but they tend to be well known only among those they represent. Senators seem to make the worst candidates, but they are more widely known.

All in all, though, it has nothing to do with gender and everything to do with character, which is why Hillary Clinton would never get my vote.
