Yeah. I didn't learn my tables and you really feel thick in high school when a teacher askes you a part of a longer sum that includes simple multiplication. I picked it up along the way though. Plus we have calculators now.
But you may aswell learn them because you will be able to do sums a lot quicker. I take it you do know how to multiply and all that so its not like you're gonna be totally dumbstruck.
Then again I don't know how they operate in your part of the world. lol.
But if you are a little dim (not saying you are), then its a good idea to learn everything you can, it will help.
Your choice tho.
Good luck

Yes, infact I had the same problem when I was learning my times tables. I really hated it and didnt want to learn them and so I delaid learning them. In delaying learning them I set myself back for many things, like division and later on in math algebra and things. It is very important to know your times tables. Maybe you can explain to your mom that learning them is really hard for you and that you hate math and she can work with you in learning them. There are many tools out there to help you. Good Luck

Holy crap. Are you sure your mom isn't focusing on the wrong thing? You've got a LOT more to work on than just math....But yeah, you should listen. Learning multiplication facts helps you out SO MUCH with math later on down the line.

Yes, you have to learn it. However, if you're an arts-focused student, you may only need 1 year of math in high school. I hated math. I graduated in 1995, from college in 2001 and guess what - never took math after 10th grade and haven't needed it!

first of all you DO NEED TO KNOW YOUR TIMES TABLES. if it were something like logarithms, i could understand how you would think you would never need to know them. multiplication though is VERY IMPORTANT. It's not hard once you get the hang of it. if it's hard for you to do, ask some of your friends or you teacher some different ways that they learned them. people have different ways of remembering things, you just need to find which works best for you. good luck!

The main reason people hate a particular subject is because they feel unsure of their ability to learn it. Multiplication tables are taught in the 3rd grade so many students feel as if it is too late to learn them if they are older and trying to learn them. It is not too late. You have to be patient and practice a lot but you can do it.
Two things are important here 1) Do you understand the concept behind multiplication? In other words, do you understand that 4 x 3 = 12 is the same as 3 groups of 4 or (or 4 groups of three) which is a SHORTCUT for adding 4+4+4 or 3+3+3+3? Don't you like shortcuts? Most people do and 2) Do you know how to use a calculator or paper and pencil to figure out what you need to know? You can "get by" without learning them but you will excel in math and life if you make this extra effort now. You use this information all the time.
Should you learn them? Absolutely. Did you hear me say that they are a shortcut? Shortcuts save us time. When you are on the computer playing one of your video games that has 30 levels and you have completed 15 when you sit down to play, do you want to have to play the first 15 again? No, of course not. If you know a secret code to punch in to bring you to that upper level or if you have saved your game up to that point then you want to be able to do that, right? Sure! Learning your multiplication tables is the same way.
Here's what I recommend. Get yourself some index cards (3 x5 are fine). On one side write 2 X 2 = and leave the answer blank. At the bottom left or right hand corner (pick one - I usually do the right hand corner) write the answer down (write it small enough to be covered by your finger but large enough to be read when you move your finger.)
Start with your two's. You probably know these by counting by twos but practice saying "two times one is two, two times two is four," and so on. Do 1 through 12. Practice, practice, practice. (Do them three times by yourself). Now go find yourself a partneer, maybe mom. You are going to play a game with your partner (mom's the perfect partner because she wants you to learn them too.) This time she is going to say them, covering the answer. She needs to say the whole sentence as well. "Two times one is..." then wait for your reply. You have about 5 seconds to answer. If you get it place the card face down in a new pile and have the next card read. Here's what's different though. She is going to start with one pile. As she holds one up and reads it you are going to try and answer it. If you get it right (right away) it goes in one pile, if you get it wrong or don't know the answer, mom will repeat the sentence and then finish it...two times one is two. Then she will place this card in a separate pile. When you are done with the original pile you will continue on with ONLY the ones you missed.
Do this every night for about 30 minutes starting with the whole pile again. When you are really good at one set add in another. I recommend 2s, 5s, 10s, 3s, 7s, then 4s, 8s and 9s.You can practice just the new set and then shuffle them up with the old or add them right away. I recommend doing them separately first. Remember speed counts here. You only have about 5 seconds to answer. If you don't get it in that time, mom states it places it face down and moves on. You keep going until there is no second pile. But it is also not a contest except against yourself. You are practicing to get better each day. Count up the number you got RIGHT at the end of the first round. Then see how you do the next night and the next and so on.
One other hint, you can write the tables for one number (say your twos) on poster board with the answer written after the = sign. Look at this and say them each night as you lay in bed. Saying them in order helps you hear the pattern of each set.

Yes, you should learn it, and yes, you will need it. I know it's not fun, but you really can't get through live without it.
Ask your mom to enroll you at one of those tutoring places - they know ways to make math more fun, and easier to learn.
