With the bridge collapsing in Minnesota, it makes me wonder, who is re4sponsible for inspecting bridges and tunnels? The state and local govt..?
If we can't depend on them to do gtheir jobs, perhaps state and local govts are obsolete and weshould just have one, big federal government that talkes care of everything.
Response?

This is a loaded question.

Personally I think it falls on the shoulders of the State Inspectors to do their jobs and do them well.

Then it's up to the Mayor, Governor and various other elected officials to make the right choices based on the criteria they've received from the inspection records to either fund whatever projects or not.

It also falls on he shoulders of the State Legislature to make sure funds are available when they balance the budget... To a point anyway.

I've worked for many mechanical engineers in my lifetime and some of them (in my opinion) have made good decisions on addressing particular engineering needs and others haven't - based on the information they review.

Granted, civil engineers and mechanical engineers aren't the same thing, but the roles they serve deal with identifying many of the same issues and decisions needing to be made.

Bridge inspection is normally a State duty. However, we don't need the Federal government to take over all bridge/road inspections--they would wind up taking longer, be done more poorly, and cost more than they do now.

Maybe we should wait to find out precisely what caused the bridge to collapse and whether current inspection procedures should have caught it or should be modified.

Even if we did that, we'd still basically have to reinstate it, because the federal government would delegate responsibilities by region.
