I used to live in southern France, in an old farmhouse. I was surrounded by walnut groves. They do not grow massive as some trees do I would estimate about 25 ft high. the tree is deciduous and has really nothing to offer as far as ornamentality is concerned, but the fresh walnuts are fabulous.

my dad had a black walnut tree in his front yard. it was very mature. about 75 ft tall. the branches and leaves had a nice outward growth pattern providing lots of shade. the nuts actually look and smell like small limes. we never did get them to ripen. the only problem is the squirrels love them. they would literally throw the nuts at us.

I'm from Texas, and to me, they always remind me of pecan trees. If you don't know what THAT looks like, though, that won't help much. I found a good web site that has excellent pictures of the foliage, bark and fruit. I hope it will help you :-)

Like that
It is very similar in appearance to some species of chestnut. The leaves are compound like an ash tree.
