Life in a human form is just one of 8,400,000 species that exists on Earth. It (the Human body) is the only medium through which the soul, which is the life force within the 'body' and which is the 'doer' of all actions (what the Christianity religion calls the Spirit) can be reunited with that one source we refer to as God.

Our lives are controlled by Karma, our actions lead to reactions, and once we live a desire free life (do our duty without being attached to, or affected by the rewards, and dedicate ourselves to the service of our fellow men) we would have fulfilled our purpose as a human being, and be free of our 'material' body.

We serve no purpose other than that.

What happens around this is the effects of material contamination. We live in an age that can be describe as 'Progressive Degradation' where honesty, truth, virtue, compassion etc is slowly declining.

Live your life for a month viewing others from a distance. Try to make sense of every action a person takes. Are we here, from birth to death, to make as much money as is possible, to wake, eat, work, entertain, eat, enjoy our bodies, sleep for no reason other that this is what was done before and it is what will be done in the future??? Think, there is a simple reason and it will come to you once you start to question the real purpose of your every action.

Before this question can be answered, we must establish what humanity is, the dictionary describes it as:-
humanity [hyoo mánnəti]
n
1. human race: the human race considered as a whole
2. qualities of a human being: the qualities or characteristics considered as a whole to be typical of human beings
3. kindness: kindness or compassion for others

But this is a definition given by the humans living in the western world, so is there vision of the word. If the rest of the world has the same vision is debatable, I say this not because I doupt there kindness or compassion but because there knowledge and beliefs are based on different experiences and lifestyles. All humans only have the ability to base there beliefs on there own knowledge and experiences.
So if the rest of the world sees the western vision of humanity as there constant need to dominate there resources, population and Thinking by the use of their financial and military power. It will effect there understanding of the western use of the word. However the answer to your question is, in the cosmos I live with its over stretched resources being obtained buy a ever increasing industrial base the humanity of the resource controlling few will become paramount to every living organism in the cosmos.

Our place in the Cosmos is still unknown.

We partially know our physical location. We know we are living in a very small rocky planet orbiting a relatively medium size star that is in orbit inside Orion’s Arm of our galaxy the Milky Way. We know the Milky Way is part of the local group wich is part of a bigger group, and then we know a relative position of the group inside the known Universe.

Somebody compared Earth to a grain of sand in a beach. Well, that is way too big. In reality, Earth would be to the Universe we know as a grain of sand is to the entire Solar System. Freaky isn’t it?

We are nothing. We are nobody. If right now our entire Solar System could be “deleted” from the Universe, it would affect nothing besides a small gravity change on close by stars.

It is up to us to decide what is our place, or at least, for now, try to figure it out. As far as we know, our future is in our own hands. We have the technology to destroy our civilization or to make it become the greatest civilization ever in the Universe. It is our decision.

Obviously, right now our future don’t look too bright between Global Warming, Terrorists, and human stupidity in general. But still, there is hope, and we all should try to get out of the tiny box we live in and realize our own potential, and how easy is to help each other to be better, and to become a better society every day.

Someone said here something about God and religion. I particularly don’t like to answer a question like this with such a stupid answer (no offense). I don’t like nor I belong to any religion. They are like a decease for us. And a clear example is what happened on 9/11/2001. And just like that, religion has play a very important role on massive destruction and global killing.

If you believe in God, and a religion, keep it for yourself. You have no right to force anyone to believe on what you believe.

If there is a God, and that God put us here, then there is probably a purpose. And that purpose shouldn’t be to be fighting against ourselves and killing each other just because of money and religion (and sometimes women too).

Unless God is an evil being, then our purpose is clear and should be to try to become better, and together to conquer the Universe that probably is out there for us.

We have so much to learn… and so little time… wait, we have all the time… we just refuse to lear the right stuff.

Think bout it.

As far as is known, we are the only intelligent life form in the cosmos. Humans hold that position in high esteem.

We live on a small planet in orbit around a medium size star in a middle sized galaxy. Overall, we are more insignificant that a grain of sand on the beach.

Uh, it's on a planet going around a little star on the inner edge of the Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy.

There is no "why?" We're just here. Deal with it.

To survive via adaptive replication as a result of mutation and natural selection. That's our function, our place is negligable so much so in fact that people fabricate crazy systems that contradict reality.

Man has a very special role or place in this cosmos, by virtue of God having breathed into man of his spirit (Qur'an). So although ALL things are created by God in this cosmos, man is one who has an aspect of God within himself.

"When thy Lord said unto the angels: lo! I am about to create a mortal out of mire, And when I have fashioned him and breathed into him of My Spirit, then fall down before him prostrate." (Qur'an: 38:71-72)
