If you've never been in business before, I would strongly recommend that you talk to a business counselor before you do anything especially spend money. I'd call the local office of SCORE (go to http://www.score.org and input your zip code to find the chapter nearest you), the advice is FREE.

The counselor at SCORE will most likely advise you to write a business plan which is very good advice because it will force you to dig out all of the start up details and the costs of starting a jewelry business and force you to also understand all of the aspects of this business including the customers you'll concentrate on (your market ) and how you'll go after them.

Try this link :

and read some of the articles especially the ones about a business plan and starting a business.

Good Luck

Study gemology. Then take a crash course in business administration or management. Make sure it has basic accounting included so you'd know how to record your investments, sales and expenses and see whether you have earned profits or incurred losses. Management is important so you'd also know how to operate a business specially if you start hiring employees. If you have great business acumen, you don't have to take another job as a fallback.

I recommend you start your own business like selling on ebay or something while your at school that way you can put what you learn to use right away. It doesnt take a lot of money to start you can borrow from family.then when you graduate you will have what you learned plus some real experience.

Go ahead, with your idea, after gaining some experience with reputed Jewelers. While gaining experience develop 'entrepreneurship in your self', and net work of young entrepreneurs with similar bent of mind. Establish a brand of your own and market your product of your 'Brand' through your own net work, world over. Ensure Quality and honesty that will pay rich dividends, ultimately.
Good Luck.
