I think legalizing prostitution would hurt the organized crime syndicates that own most governments. Making it legal, regulating it, taxing it, would be of great benefit to the workers. Then police effort could be focused more on busting the pimps and sex slave owners. The workers (mostly female) would be able to work for a couple of years and then go to college to aim for a longer term career. I'd say the risk would be less than joining the army (where workers swear their life away to the military bureaucracy) or being under the thumb of some scummy crime lord who's only concern is power and money.
To the moralists out there; you're never going to stop it and keeping it illegal only helps the most despicable, rotten, slime infested, hell-bound maggots to continue increasing their strength, reaching high levels of power, and driving our society down the the bowels of the netherworld.

Legalizing prostitution would likely bring down the price of hookers since at the current market they are charging highly because of the nature of their job - very high risk when it is against the law and they have to watch out that they are not being raided by the law enforcers, who is the law enforcer etc.

That being said, with lower prices being charged and a negative social consequence of being labelled a prostitute and maybe being left out from certain jobs because it is frowned upon and unlikely is it going to be celebrated that an individual once worked in that profession unless very real reasons forced them into that line of work, like starving, paying medical bills etc. it is likely that less women will want to consider prostitution as a career/job since there is little incentive to do so when social consequnces is large, money earned is less ... ...
(Making fast money is probably not going to bring much compassion since most people are working hard at their job and earning much less given the complexity or somplicity of their job functions)
Prostitution is bad because it preys on men's weaknesses and the bad habits formed can have lasting impact. It is not much different from illegal drugs which give a supernatural high but is gone very quickly and eventually the body is desensitived and much more is needed to give the same level of "high". These problems will follow the individual to work as the fantasy cannot be maintained (which woman is going to smile and flirt around in the real world?) and trying to maintain it leads to wanting more than what a person can earn which is what happens to a lot of illegal drug users, who later turn to criminal activities to get their next cloud 9, and of course the crash - cycle continues but society can see that it is difficult to reform bad habits.
Thus legalizing prostitution will hurt organized crimes since a competitive market will force the prices down and a low risk activity from the gals themselves will allow them to charge less since now it is not illegal.

I think if prostitution was legalised, illegal prostitution would continue. The "crime world" would continue to provide underground prostitutes because there would still be a market for it, among the worst of the male population.
At present, abused and raped prostitutes have trouble getting the law on their side (to put it mildly) because they themselves are liable for prosecution simply because of the profession they've found themselves in. If prostitution was legalised, their clients would be obliged to behave themselves - and men, being what they are, would gravitate towards the illegal workers, women they could get away with abusing.

Yes, that's the number one reason. It's also the reason that cannabis will never be legalized. People who donate large amounts to political camaigns are making too much money to let that happen.

Yes, it would.

The same way that legalizing any non-violent vice has hurt organized crime.
