no. the big bang is not an expansion of matter into pre-existing space. it is an expansion of space itself. if the cosmic background radiation was emitted from matter in a hot dense state, it should show a black body curve characteristic of a temperature of a few thousand kelvins. but its temperature is about 2.5 kelvins, consistent with the wavelengths of the spectrum being stretched by expansion of space.
expansion of space may seem like a weird concept but it makes sense in general relativity, where gravity itself is a warping of spacetime. there is also independent evidence that space is expanding, from the redshifts of distant galaxies.

Generally speaking, no, because the Big Bang arose from a singularity, which was infinitely dense and infinitely small.
However, there were small vacuum-type regions that popped up but were quickly filled by the very hot, very dense soup that was the Unvierse in the first 300,000 years or so. While there may have been a small moment in time when the universe's center contained exactly nothing, it would have been quickly filled by crap that bounced off of other crap in the murk.
EDIT: Michael B, you're thinking Cosmic Background Radiation.

No. The Big Bang is not like a typical explosion. Instead of things moving through space, it is space itself expanding. There is no center of the expansion (or alternatively, every place is the center of expansion).

I think the big bang theory began because of this exact reason. After the big bang a large amount this thing called cosmic (something, I forgot) that was left over from the bang. You can google it but I know it was called cosmic something.
