As usual, this depends on your personal outlook on life. I'd imagine for religious people an individual is a soul, a thinking entity created specifically by the god known as _____ that inhabits a flesh sack.

As for atheists, I'm gonna guess they perceive an individual to be a distinctive contained chemical reaction governed by a biological neural network.

An old term perpetuated by modernists who cannot let go and accept the new state of Being constructed through distributed consciousness and knowledge. All singularity is already always a plurality--just like these words are not "mine" for I do not own them; they are the production culmating through this "seemingly singular body called me" by the numerous others who have taught me to think, write, type, etc. (thus, those previous answers of "independence" do so through the socially constructed medium of language--"True" independence would be meaningless because one would need to construct his or her own language, but then who would understand it?)

To me an individual is defined by his/her consciousness as molded by his/her experiential curve through perception, thought, emotion, imagination, intent and action.......... body and mind are the tools to provide the experience.
