The original idea was to have a peaceful protest for an 8 hour work day. The original day was May 1 and over 350,000 workers walked off the job over a 3 day period. The largest protest ended up in Chicago. On May 3, the International Working People's Party (IWPA) wanted to have another strike at the McCormicks Harvesting Machine Company. The leader of the this party, Albert Parsons, was an anarchist. While they were having this strike, replacement workers tried to cross the picket line and go to work. A fight broke out and police tried to break it up. They killed 4 strikers and wounded several others.

The next day a peaceful rally was started for those killed at Haymarket Square. Police were ready for this rally. The crowd was very calm as the leader of the rally, August Spies, made a speech. As the rally started to wind down, police tried to disperse the rally and someone threw a bomb into the police line and killed one policeman. The police opened fired on the crowd. As many as 60 police were wounded and many in the crowd. When it was done, 6 police and 4 civilians were killed.
