The other day after my calculus class, I stood up and streached. It was as usual, my vision went black and I got kinda dizzy, I guess from my blood rushing to my legs after their not being used in the past hour or so. But this time it lasted longer and kinda fell headfirst into the desk, just barely catching myself groping around in the dark reaching for something to break my fall. I was dizzier than usual and it felt like i was floating and could hardly control my body.

Is this something that I should be worried about?

I would see your doc. I say this because I had that same thing--it happened to me a lot, at least once a day. When I went to my doc, I found out that it was a combination of several things: dehydration, not having enough electrolytes, low blood pressure.

While getting momentarily lightheaded isn't serious, that sort of half-fainting is a sign of something--not necessarily anything dangerous (all I needed to do was drink more fluids, particularly gatorade), but you don't want to risk hurting yourself if you fall again. Not to mention, it's just plain scary and uncomfortable! So I would explain what you just told us to your doc. In the meantime, make sure you're drinking enough fluids, since the summer heat makes dehydration a bigger risk. Dizziness is one of the classic signs of heat-related problems like dehydration, heat exhaustion, heat stroke, etc. Be especially careful if you live in a hot area (like I do--TX). Good luck!

Wow you're the first person I've heard that has the same sort of thing as I do. I get that quite a bit. yes, you may want to get it checked out. The doctors thought I could have some sort of brain tumor or something. I didn't when they checked, but it's always a possibility.

I find that maybe it's caused by stress. My doctor doesn't know for sure, but they're guessing it's some form of a migraine.

Sounds like poor circulation. I used to have this happen to me in college. One time I got up fast to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and woke up on the toilet after PASSING OUT! (No, alcohol was NOT involved!) Also my legs would hurt something fierce at night. I would just suggest doing more cardio to strengthen your heart and help your circulation. Since I started exercising I have not had ANY more problems in 10 years.

It could be. Have you been eating well and had you had breakfast that day? You could have hypotension ( low blood pressure) but what is that due to ?is the question. I think you might take your time standing up from now on and have a check up and mention this episode to the MD.

You probably need a daily work out. It was a sudden drop in blood pressure. Mention it at your next physical. If you are in America without health insurance I would not be too worried. Break it up, stand, after a moment stretch.

Um . . . you fainted. It could be because you had low blood pressure or low blood sugar or were dehydrated or all of the above. Keep yourself from being hungry or thirsty but stay away from high-sugar foods. If it keeps happening, you gotta' go to a doctor.
