Juan Ponce De Leon was the first to land in Florida in 1513.
In 1521 he returned with 200 settlers to start a colony at St. Augustine, but the colony failed because of Indian attacks.
In 1539 and 1540 Hernando De Soto explored the Gulf Coast from Florida to the Mississippi.
In 1559 a colony was established at Pensacola by Tristan de Luna y Arillano, but this colony also failed in 2 years.
The City of St. Augustine was permanently established in 1565 by Admiral Pedro Menendez de Aviles, and is the oldest city in what is now the U.S.
