The USA Patriot Act was enacted after the September 11, 2001 attacks. Do you believe that this legislation protects the liberties guaranteed to U.S. citizens by the Bill of Rights? If so, explain and support your position. If not, describe at least one liberty that you believe has been infringed upon by the acts

It was enacted soon after 9/11, it was in writing well before then.

No, I believe it rescinds the liberties guaranteed to U.S. citizens. Namely, the Freedom from search without a warrant.

I believe that the Patriot Act is foremost misnamed at best. It is the first step on a road to losing the freedoms that we value so dearly in the USA. An example, ok. The Patriot Act has been used to keep tabs on people selling drugs in the United States it has been used to arrest said drug dealers. This is not the reason we were given for accepting this so called Patriot Act. Recently i heard the head of Homeland Security"?" saying in a speech that people who grow Marijuana were as bad as "terrorists" not only that but that said Marijuana growers would willingly aid "terrorists" bent on killing Americans. This i refute most strongly!!! This is a line of crap. Using the Patriot Act to bust people growing Marijuana is not only unconstitutional but it is inane. It is simply not true that Marijuana growers would willingly aid "terrorists". Terrorists are not making money off of selling Marijuana. There might however be some bad men selling large shipments of Heroin and or Cocaine to fund evil ventures (read up on the CIA for that, also look up how much opium was exported from afghanistan when the taliban controlled it compared to before and after). In any case i believe that the Patriot Act is being misused even from their stated purpose. The fact that it is being used to spy on and arrest American Citizens is proof enough of that. Sure you say "but if they are only busting drug dealers, then why do i care?". Just ask yourself if there is ANYTHING that you do in the day that you might not want to be eavesdropped on. Because if they can get away with using it to bust pot dealers, they can get away with using it for anything else.

No. The patriot act came about because the president and his mafia crew dont want to legally ask the court for permission to spy on people. The reason they dont want to ask the court is because they have no evidence that would allow a judge to issue a warrant. The right to privacy in one's home has been reduced and in some cases completely violated. Did you know the government and the police can commit a home invasion crime and invade your home to plant listening devices? Anybody else would be jailed. If you think the gov if limiting the spying to wiretapping and internet surveilance then you may be supprised. What about the spy planes with the infrared heat sensing equipment that can produce images of the inside of your house. You may be on thier surveilance while in the privacy of your bedroom. Are you in favor of the patriot act?

The Patriot Act doesn't make me feel any safer and I believe that privacy should never be violated. Especially in the United States of all places.

This is a totatlitarian legislation. Ever wonder why the word Patriot needs to be part of the name?

There are significant flaws in the Patriot Act, flaws that threaten fundamental freedoms such as giving the government the power to access to your medical records, tax records, information about the books you buy or borrow without probable cause, and the power to break into your home and conduct secret searches without telling you for weeks, months, or indefinitely. Wow, does that sound like freedom to you?

And to the poster who says that they'll only look at you if your are a doing something bad -- WRONG!! they are using this "terrorist" tool to look into many other things. It is a clear violation of our basic rights. And you have georgie porgie and the neo-cons that you voted for to thank for all of it!

I don't have time to answer the question in the detail that I'd like but I think it's odd we found a Vietnamese immigrant of only 36 years of age to author a document that fails to uphold the Constitution.

Many Americans, just like freakzilla, may think there is nothing to worry about since they claim to be upstanding citizens. I would guess they may be right, but what do their neighbors and co-workers believe?

Who wants their honor questioned once an anonymous call to the terrorist hot line has been made?

I would like to know if their fist call of panic would be to a Republican or Democrat elected official, in order to clear their name...

Aside from the provisions that were already struck down as unconstitutional in 2004 -- the Patriot Act itself doesn't cut down on any civil liberties -- it just allows the govt to do more with data that is already out there....

Other programs and laws have drastically affected civil liberties -- but the Patriot Act of 2001 (as a single piece of legislation) did not.
