It means you can change things you"ve already wrote down , typed, e. t, c., you can go back and edit, as in , you may edit your yahoo ID, or you may edit the manuscript of a book you are writing, or have wrote, as long as the book hasn"t ben published, you can edit an essay. Edit means chane. If someone tells you to edit , they mean they want you to change something.
