Could be a bad torque converter that is locked up inside. When you put the car in reverse(or forward) it stalls the engine because there is no longer a fluid connection beteween the engine and tranny.

Try this for an idea... I had an 87 Jimmy that did the same thing... right after I had done some work under the hood.... I popped the hood open and started the engine and just listened...I heard a whistle and found a vacuum hose had popped off... put it back on and things were okay... so maybe you should try that... listen for a vacuum leak and find it...cheaper than a garage....

not to be mean or anything, but it uh, suposed to go Forward..lol u know Toyota "Moving FORWARD"...lol sorry, idk what the problem might be. It could be a bad wire or bad transmission...

w/e it is, be careful and good luck
i would recommend asking the dealership

check the neutral switch on the bottom of the steering column --- it may not be aligned or it is loose at one side ....
