I looked at this small 2 bedroom apt for $685.00 a month. The entrance to the apt is a cellar door that stays open at all times. it is small but set up decent and can save money for a year.

The cellar is enclosed with a foyer, greenhouse looking type. So when you walk down the stairs to the entrance there is normal size door. When you walk up and out your in the foyer.

I don't see anything wrong, except heating it in winter.

Sounds great! It's not like you'll be locked in there for the entire year . . . any apartment would be dreadful if that were the case! It really doesn't matter whether it's basement or top floor, as long as you like it. If it's going to save you a bunch of money, I'd say go for it!

P.S. to Shelcom: A basement apartment will stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter due to the natural insulation of the ground around it. If you don't have a bunch of big windows and doors that let the weather seep in, you'll be saving on energy bills, too!

Do you have windows? If you are 100% underground, and don't have any windows, you might not enjoy it that much, especially in the winter when there is less sunlight.

Also, if there are no windows, and only one way out, I wouldn't feel very safe living there. If there was ever a fire that prevented you from getting out the cellar door, you'd be trapped.

Depends on where it is. For example, some parts of upstate New York have radon (radioactive isotope) gas seeping out of the ground. This would collect in a basement and could be harmful.

Otherwise, the only thing I would be concerned about is a lack of windows. You might go stir crazy after awhile.

sounds like the apartment my friend moved out of last year. she stayed there 2 years. i don't think its healthy. its always damp from the concrete walls and floor. the next room had 3 gas furnaces and 3 gas water heaters. watch out for co2. if you only stay a year i don't think it will hurt unless you have allergies,

Ask if any water drains into it in winter.
That's probably the only problem I can think of, other than it's possible to have moisture/mold problems.
