let L =length
let L-5= width

2L+2(L-5)=34
2L+2L-10=34
4L-10=34
4L=44
L=11 length
L-5=6 width

Check

2L+2(L-5)=34
2(11) +2(11-5)=34
22+2(6)=34
22+12+34
34=34

l= length, w=width

formula for perimeter is 2l+2w=34

l=w+5

so

2(w+5) +2w = 34
2w +10 +2w =34
4w = 24
w = 6
