No the Rose bowl as well as many of the conference presidents all seem to be blocking a real college football playoff from happening. In addition many University AD'S have also opposed changing the preexisting system.
What really gets me angry is the hypocrisy of some how they are protecting the student athlete by not having a playoff system. Never mind the fact they all agreed to have night games in the middle of the week.
Some are afraid the regular season would be cheapened by a playoff system. Yet why do the SEC,ACC, and the BIG 12 all have conference playoffs? Money and the fact everybody wants to protect their own little fiefdom.
Heaven forbid if some bowl executive from the Fill in the Blank.COM Bowl sponsored by ACME Corporation would have to admit his Bowl is rather insinificant.
Relax keep your shirt on you can still have some of these little bowls. Just play the 4 major BCS BOWLS (teams) as the 1st round of the playoff system. 2nd week would be semifinals and then you would have the real BCS national champion game.

I don't know if the answerer above me realized that EVERY OTHER SPORT in College has some form playoff to derterimine it's champion, including Football on the lower division levels (who have more teams than D-1 Bowl Division).
Anyway, probably never. The only thing anyone can probably hope for is eventually is maybe a plus-one situation where two winners of the BCS games are selected to play for the National title.

Eventually, I think what is going to happen is that the NCAA will go to 5 super conferences. Then the top 12 teams will get a playoff bid. With the top 4 getting a first round bye. Each game will be a "Bowl Game." Since that college football is all corporate anyway, you can name the first round games by the corporation that will sponser that game. Then as you get further into it, they name them by the traditional bowl names ie Rose, Orange, Fiesta, Suger and yes Cotton should be in that talk since they will be in a better staidium by 2009. The final game like now will be called the National Championship Game.

They already have it. Use the Bowl Games as the playoff games. They still get the revenues and they have a playoff system.

maybe just add 1 extra home game to the #2 team in the nation. the 3 seed then travels there after all reg season games r completed and the winner of that game faces the #1 seed.
