How about an original idea???? Start with one sentence and go from there........... I write down ideas all the time.... Most of mine come in the middle of the night... I keep a paper and pencil beside the bed...... thats where my best writings come from.... I write poetry by the way.......Sometimes when I wake up I have no idea what or why I wrote down what I did........but it usually comes out beautiful.....

I would say go ahead and write what you want to. It's good practice, and you might be surprised what happens. Write your pirate story. If nothing else, you might find yourself attached to a character, or going off in a strange direction. Actually the pirates movie could help you -- I teach grade three, and five years ago there wasn't a pirate book to be seen. Now my kids are right into them. So there's actually more of a market for them than there might have been before Johnny Depp came along.

The other thing you might consider is taking these ideas you have and putting a twist on them. What about a pirate novel in space? Or in submarines? Come up with something wild and see what happens. Writing is work but it should also be fun: play with it and don't worry about the results!

There are many topics or ideas that have been written on before such as you mentioned. I wrote a book on integrity. Integrity has had many books written on it but I chose to take a different path. I presented information about integrity in a manner that had not been previously addressed. I have had comments that it is probably the first book of its kind.

I would not worry on whether a topic has been previously published. The key is to take an approach that has a different perspective. If you are writing a fiction book there are many ways you can approach a topic and not be a repeat from previously published books.

If you are writing a non-fiction book, again take a different approach to the topic that interests you that has not been addressed in other books. It is important to remember that whatever topic you choose you should have a passion for it and a desire to write on the topic. In many cases you can write on your perspective on topics without having duplicate content.

My book is Integrity: Do You Have It? 2nd edition and I chose to take a different approach to the topic that has been widely discussed and published, both articles and books. It is an example with what can be done on a topic that has wide exposure.

Good luck.

Start little, and don't pick such mainstream ideas.
You have to find your own voice to your writing, and develop it before anything else can happen. And it's not quite as simple as just "writing a book". There's a lot of work and research involved in it. It's not something you can do on a whim.

I'm not trying to discourage you. I think that you wanting to write a book is great. Maybe try for some short stories first?

Write about whatever you want to write about. Keep in mind that it's been said anything anyone can write about now has already been done before, but it's the characters and settings that make the newer material original.

Write what you love and don't worry about the rest. I might not write about a boy wizard who's parents were killed when he was a boy and then discovered, on his eleventh birthday, that he's a wizard, but you can still write about a wizard.

I don't remember who said this quote, but it stands true: "There are no new ideas, only new twists on old ideas."

If you have a story in your head, get it down on paper.

Good Luck!

Write a book about someone who wants to write a book, but every time he gets a good idea it turns into a cultural phenomenon before he can start it.

I imagine most everything has already been done. You just need to find what YOU would be good at.
I would start visiting a writing forum and start with the exercises they offer. I think you will find your groove then...
Good luck.

Not all of your books are going to make a bestseller that's just how it goes, sorry, don't strive for it to be a bestseller, just do your best, if it becomes a best seller, than it just does.
