My honda foreman smokes when you rev it up high and uses oil... it use to not do this till i told someone to blow the airbox out. it has no loss of compresson or power. im thinking of overhauling the engine myself what could be the main thing wrong making it smoke?

Changed oil , it doesnt have water in it but you can smell traces of oil in smoke. it has 5,110 miles on it and the speedometer went out . (it didnt work when i bought it) so i could have 10,000 miles on it

It is a typical gas engine, pull the cylinder head off and inspect the cylinder for wear. If it is in spec just hone it and replace the rings, then inspect the valve guides and replace the valve seals. This is a really easy engine to work on, you might want to buy a factory service manual before you dive into it so you have all the spec for it. I have one and get parts and manuals online since I live 48 miles from the dealer.

there should be a number on crankcase cover near where you fill the oil...it should say something like 650cc....this is the amount of oil it takes....I recommend you buy a manual....different bikes take different weights of oil and if you dont use the correct weight it can cause clutch slippage.....do not use synthetics...for example my 79 yamaha dt175 takes 10-30 and my 78 suzuki pe175 takes 20-40....my yamaha takes 650cc of oil and the suzuki takes 800cc...
