Because kids watched it every time Disney showed it. Disney thought, "Hey, we can milk this!" so they started showing it more, and casting the lead roles in other things, and churning out notebooks, posters, lip gloss and underwear, then did ad campaigns making it seem like the "coolest" thing. I'm sure its a good movie, but half the kids that like it only do because they're following the trend that Disney made up. Its easy to have a favorite movie that's so obviously "approved" by your peer group. It's instant acceptance and popularity. The same goes for Harry Potter.

good question, because i believe it is a total rip-off of Grease. the only difference is no one smokes and everyone is nice. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! Kids don't smoke in school, but they still do stuff outside of school today? in Grease almost every character acted like a punk or was mean in some way (except sandy). it doesn't make sense, kids are meaner today than they were in those days, so why make every character a "goody-two-shoe". another i hated was that there are no TRUE misfits in the films. TRUE misfits stay away from society or rebel against, why not have a "high school musical" that talks about those who don't fit in but don't want to, but everyone seems to hate them because they won't conform to society, something that is similar to RENT? i think that would cool, combine high school musical with rent. but that's my opinion.

Cuz everyone (except me) thinks Zac Efron is hot. Haven't you noticed that it's only girls that are obsessed with that movie?
I am proud to say that I am 16 and have never watched high school musical.

ok i think its cuz kids really like music and its stuff that they can sort of relate to. Hey im 13 and i luv it cuz of Zac so most of the reason is probably cuz of Zac.

Grease was very popular when it first came out too.. havent seen HS Muscial yet, but I'll bet that is the reason. hot guys and cool songs..

because its one of those movies that brighten ur day. it has a good disney cast. the music and choreography are just awesome. it inspired me to not be shy anymore when i first watched it...
